San Rafael Fencing Classes
Golden Gate School of Arms teaches a living tradition of fencing arts descended from master to student since the 19th century. In our San Rafael fencing classes students, learn century-old techniques under the professional direction of instructor Benjamin Bowles. Students of any level are may attend and learn the fundamentals through the most advanced tactics. New students welcome anytime!
No experience is necessary to start fencing and all equipment is provided. Attend your first class wearing comfortable clothes you can easily move in, but please do not wear black. Non-marking tennis, running, or dance shoes are acceptable. Your first class will be an introduction to classical fencing, how to hold the sword, the en guard position, and initial maneuvers. Location & Parking
Classes in San Rafael are held regularly at the Marin Masonic Building in downtown, near the corner of Lootens Place and 4th Street. The building is the home of the Freemasons of the 191 Marin Masonic Lodge, established in 1868. We fence in the first floor banquet room featuring vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors. The exterior doors lock at 7pm so please be on-time to class. If you're late please call the instructor for entry.
Metered street parking is available and free of cost after 6pm. The closest garage is four blocks away on C street (click for directions) and is also free after 6pm. Classes may also be reached via the San Rafael Transit Center with busses arriving from and departing to nearly every area of the bay. The Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) also arrives 4 blocks away (6 min walk).
Membership at the Golden Gate School of Arms grants unlimited classes per month at the best rate. Discounts also extend to individual plastron lessons during class, private lessons, and special seminars. Members will be awarded a school patch to affix onto their off-hand jacket sleeve after six months of attendance.
